David Nicholas is one of the original CIBER founders. His interests include use and seeking behaviour in virtual spaces, the digital consumer, the virtual scholar, mobile information (information on-the-go), e-books, e-journal usage; the evaluation of digital platforms and scholarly communication and reputation.
Professor Nicholas was Director of the Department of Information Studies at University College London (2004–2011) and prior to that Head of the Department of Information Science at City University 1997–2003. David hasbeen principal investigator on 60 research projects worth more than £6M and published around 500 peer evaluated papers, report and books
David is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Tennessee and was also a Professor at Northumbria University (2015–16)
David Clark has over forty years experience of publishing and related industries as a data processor, information manager and analyst. His PhD, from the University of Warwick, concerns the history and establishment of computing as a distinct academic discipline.
Anthony Watkinson has been a researcher in ecclesiastical history and a scholarly librarian but spent most of his career in scholarly publishing working for both not-for-profit and commercial publishers. He was visiting professor in the department of information sciences at City University for six years and during this time was one of the founders of CIBER.
Most of his publications have been with CIBER but he has also written on Open Access, Monograph Publishing, and Authenticity particularly in relation to Archiving and Preservation of digital content. He is currently a part-time senior lecturer at at University College London and also a director and plenary chair of the Charleston Conference, organises and chairs the annual Bloomsbury Conference, and runs training courses and seminars for the International Association of Science, Technical and Medical Publishers. Anthony has undertaken consultancy work for a number of organisations including JISC, the Cochrane Collaboration, and other learned societies. He has for over a decade been a consultant to the (UK) Publishers Association. His interests are in scholarly communication including, currently and in particular, open access, data, social media and outreach
Eti Herman spent most of her working life at the University of Haifa, Israel, as Head of Reader Services and Head of Administration, as well as Acting Vice-Director of the Library (1980-1994), Academic Secretary (1995-2000), and faculty member in the Information and Library Studies Programme (2001-2010). She is also Head of the Editorial Board of Meidaat, the only Israeli journal of information science and librarianship.
Her main areas of research interest are information needs and information behaviour in the digital era, particularly of academics, with a current focus on quality assurance, trust and authority in scholarly communications. She is joint editor of the four-volume Information Science in Routledge's Critical Concepts in Media and Cultural Studies Series.
John Akeroyd is a library and information specialist with over 40 years’ experience in libraries, government and academia. He was for a long time a University Librarian and Director of Learning and Information responsible for libraries, e-learning, IT services, document systems and archiving. He was Director of LITC, a national research and evaluation centre for library technology and of the Distance learning Centre a publishing and education service focussed on health. He has inaugurated, managed and been a participant in multiple projects in UK and Europe, including some which have sustained as self-funding businesses.
For the past decade, he has been a consultant, researcher and programme manager. His clients have included the UK National Health Service, central and local government, the British Library and the international agency, ISSN. Recent contracts have included a review of legal deposit of ‘emerging formats’ on behalf of the national library, a market investigation of open source integrated library management systems and an options appraisal for a dual use library and associated systems for the City of London.
John is an Honorary Research Fellow at University College London where he organises and chairs the annual Discovery meeting. Current research interests include discovery systems and discoverability. He has authored over 100 papers and speaks regularly at international meetings. Since January 2017 he has been Chair of the International UDC Consortium.
Clare Thornley has an MA in Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh, an MSc in Information Management, and a PhD in Information Retrieval from the University of Strathclyde. She has published widely on innovation, information ethics, Knowledge Management and research evaluation. Her recent funded projects include: Innovation in Academic/ Industry Collaborations; Evaluating Video Retrieval research; and Professional ethics for the Library and Information Profession. Clare currently teaches ‘Information Organisation’ for the Masters of Library and Information Management at Dublin Business School.
Hamid R. Jamali is a senior lecturer at the School of Information Studies, Charles Sturt University, Australia. His interests include scholarly communication, research evaluation and information behaviour. He has published extensively and was acknowledged by The Australian’s 2019 Research Magazine as the country's top Library and Information Science researcher.
Abrizah Abdullah is Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology, University of Malaya. Actively involved in teaching, supervision and services, she researches information behavior, scholarly communication, bibliometrics, and digital libraries. She has published more than 70 journal articles and speaks regularly at international meetings. She is the editor-in-chief of Malaysian Journal of Library & Information Science and a research fellow at the Malaysian Citation Centre, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. Her PhD, from the University of Malaya concerns elicitation of users need in architecting a collaborative digital library and demonstrating how Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architecture is used as an analytical tool for modelling and building digital libraries.
Blanca Rodríguez-Bravo is Professor of Library and Information Science at the University of Leon (Spain) where she is involved in teaching –LIS degree and Masters-, supervision and services as she has been Head of Department and currently is Head of the Archive, Academic library and Online University. She teaches as well at the University of Salamanca in the Master of Digital Information Systems.
Her research interests are focused in scholarly communication, electronic information’s consumption, information behavior, collection development, knowledge organization and digital libraries. She has been head of regional and national projects and has published more than a hundred papers, books and chapters.
Nick Canty is a lecturer at University College London where he teaches on the MA in Publishing. Before joining academia he had a background is in the publishing industry where he worked for 15 years as a commissioning editor and publisher, working for Pearson, Thomson Reuters and for the academic press of a professional society. In these roles set up, managed commercial business units, and launched various commercial projects covering books to online information services giving him experience of a wide variety of publishing formats. His research interests include social media and transformation in the publishing industry.
Prof. Marzena Świgoń is Full Professor of Social Sciences and works at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland). She is the Head of the Department of Media Studies at the Institute of Journalism and Social Communication.
Her main research interests are: scholarly communication, knowledge sharing, knowledge and information management, social media, information limits, information behaviour, employability and futures studies.
Jie Xu is Deputy Director of the Publishing Studies Department in the School of Information Management at Wuhan University, China. Her PhD was awarded jointly by Leiden University and Wuhan University in 2012. Since 2014 she has been associate professor in charge of undergraduate student affairs and international collaboration in the department. Her research interests are scholarly publishing, researchers’ information behavior and social media study.
Chérifa Boukacem-Zeghmouri is Full Professor in Information and Communication Science at Université de Lyon (Lyon 1 University) and member of the Elico research team. She has led many research projects, among them the first ANR research project analyzing the usage of electronic journals in French universities, in partnership with the French consortium COUPERIN. Her current research interests relate to scholarly communication and Open Science as a creative industry. She is member of the editorial board of “Publications”.
Galina Serbina [Галина Сербина] is a Deputy Director of the Tomsk State University Research Library [Научная библиотека ТГУ]; supporting research, managing related departments, and leading the sociological projects of the Library. A Project Manager at the TSU Laboratory of Big Data in Social Sciences, she has been managing SNA research projects on communities in on-line social networks. Her main research interests are library and information studies, social network analysis and social media studies.
